How does this apply to unconventional relationships, such as same-sex or non-monogamous partnerships?

In sexual relationships between two people of the same gender, sometimes the terms “top” and “bottom” are used.  Often people who identify as a “top” in a relationship relate to the “male” role in a relationship – they enjoy being the provider – and “bottoms” relate to the “female” side of a relationship and enjoy receiving.  There are usually complex patterns within relationships involving more than two people, but it can often help to simplify things when “tops” and “bottoms” within the patterns are identified.   I have worked with clients to build creative relationships that are fulfilling and fun, regardless of the genders of the people in them.
