People say “live your passions” but I don’t know what my passions are! What is wrong with me?
There’s a growing awareness that the secret to living a fulfilling life is to follow one’s inner guidance. However, just knowing this is true doesn’t at all mean that it is a simple thing to do. Most of us have been trained since we were born to “do the right thing,” and this training severely impairs our ability to listen to our inner voice. The process of unwinding all of our life’s training is a confusing, difficult and sometimes painful one, and it takes time.
I encourage my clients to get to know themselves in the small details of life. I’ve found that paying attention to our small “insignificant” wants and enjoyments can open the way to uncovering our deeper passions and desires.
But, as I tell my clients, please don’t turn the idea of “living your passion” into yet one more example of your failure to “do the right thing.” As you breathe and let go of shoulds and judgment, and as you relax and play, your passion will probably come to you. If it doesn’t, well, at least you’re spending your time relaxing, playing, and having fun anyway!
